Hi, I'm Josh.
So, I had this idea to re-launch McOrigins again with a few missions.
So, I had this idea to re-launch McOrigins again with a few missions.
- Revolving around the community.
McOrigins was known for its great community. It was a small hole in the wall of a server that gained in popularity over time. There were rumors about the original server closing due to financial reasons. That wasn't it. We as an administration were burnt out. It didn't help that Minecraft's player base was declining when we decided to close. I sometimes say that if we waited a few months for Covid we could still be open today without shutdown. But in reality, the old McOrigins wasn't set up to handle the new changes. I believe we would have been version-locked like other servers are today. Minecraft as it is today is not what it was back in 2018. We can do so much more which will make us more unique. So last year, when we officially started the work, our main goal for our game types was to keep the roots of McOrigins and force community interaction. To this day, I still get messages about who was on their old friends list. To be honest, the initial idea of re-opening the server was driven by the discord chat about players looking for their long-lost friends, and thumbing around the old build server where MotorCraft showed me an unreleased spawn. So here we are. Yeah, we can just open the server with basic game modes and minigames. But that's not our mission.
In conclusion, we as an administration were still in high school (I say administration as the admins and staff members). We are now in our 20s and we want to open a community-based server. That's it. The Minecraft multiplayer landscape is littered with servers that are carbon copies of 20 different servers out there. We want to set an example. We want to be a fun server to play on with friends or make friends along the way. As far as Minecraft's player base, Minecraft isn't going anywhere. Babies are being born, adults get bored and seek out hobbies (look who's talking).
- Being open.
Minecraft servers today are running off bad morals. Relying on YouTube channels like TheMisterEpic to expose the rear-end of scummy server owners. To be honest, I feel like servers are opening today to make a few bucks and dashing for the hills. It's no secret as it's plastered all over YouTube. Our hearts are in the right place here.
Our goal is to, honestly, give back to the community. We want to see people start YouTube channels and grow with us (more on this in Kyle's post). We want players to contribute to our server. We want it to be fun working here.
As far as 'being open', we want to be open-source, without providing our code of course. One idea of this I have is Parkour. Parkour will feature a submission-based map maker server. We'll call this server "Creator." In Creator, you can make a parkour map on our server and then submit it to the map repository for the main Parkour server. For these types of Parkour maps, we would like the option for players to be able to download the map. It would come with the world and the data file. You could download a plugin here on our site, drop the file in the plugin folder, and play the map right from your server.
For being a resource pack-based server we keep talking about, we want players to submit art and make resourcepack files that could be applied to our server. Resource packs are challenging. I think it would be cool for in-depth tutorials on how we did certain things on our server for you to get a better understanding of how resource packs work. What am I getting at? Well, as for setting the example, we want to see you open a server of your own. Be unique. Maybe you could be the next big server? Maybe you could do it better than us?
- Financials (P2W).
Another key point in this discussion. Money. Again, I'm not going into this for the money. What I'd like is to be able to pay the bills, pay the team, invest it back into the server, whatever. I'd be happy to take home $1 a month if so be it. We have many ideas we would like to patch in, but we'll save those for later.
As for the server store, we believe we can be mostly cosmetic - not just fully pay to win like other servers. Ranks will get benefits that pertain to us storing that data (I'm being very vague). Whether it be a couple of extra rows in the enderchest, a larger friends list, or maybe even your own private server. As for items. ALL items will be obtainable in-game no matter what.
We are not here to make a few bucks. I want the team to be paid for their time and work. I want the server to grow.
- Support.
Another thing I noticed while doing some research on other servers: where is all the support? When our server was still up, we had in-game tickets. Where is that energy everywhere else? Our support system will be advanced. If we have to over-staff, so be it. But expect support rather quickly from us. It's frustrating to see other minecraft and discord servers have such lacklustre support. Rest assured, we'll be on hand to deal with any issues that you may encounter.
Well, that's me. Read more below and learn more about the rest of our team.
